Meet our team – David Black – Digital Director

Continuing our ‘Meet the Team’ blog series, we’d like to introduce you to Dave, our Digital Director. A true northerner and co-founder of 1973 Ltd, Dave heads up production and development – and keeps the team in check!

Originally inspired by the digital revolution, Dave ventured into web programming, clocking up years of experience as a developer with several digital agencies. In more recent years he has followed a destined path to become an email specialist, providing leading edge email marketing services as well as becoming a certified Eloqua developer in 2009. Here’s what Dave had to say during his interview:

Q: What is a typical day like in the office?

My day generally revolves around managing workflow.  It starts with a review of scheduled projects and a catch-up on international client emails received overnight, to feed into the day’s activities.  After a quick tea run it’s down to business, briefing the team on any changes, new learnings and sharing positive client feedback – I find this really boosts engagement, focusing attention and motivating the team to the tasks in hand.

The majority of my day is spent working through my many detailed lists (something I am renowned for in the office), liaising with clients, answering questions, developing and gathering campaign assets from internal and external sources and pushing projects through to meet deadlines – something I take great pride in.

Throughout the day I also cost up new opportunities, providing statements of work to existing and new clients.  The nice thing about my role is I get a complete overview of what is going on, from new projects on the horizon to what we’re currently working on, right through to delivery. I get a bird’s eye view of everything.

Q:What’s the best bit about your job?

My job is very diverse and always challenging! I love managing jobs from start to finish and seeing the end result.  What I particularly enjoy is the interaction it offers enabling me to work closely with my internal team and clients.  Because of this I am able to gain feedback from everyone involved so that we can use that learning and feed it back into the next campaign. This is what makes our campaigns so successful.

Q:What’s it like working with the 1973 team?

It’s really great working so closely with the team – it enables me to see their strengths, skills and development. They are an energetic and progressive bunch, always looking for new ideas and the next best thing to keep things fresh.

We’re all email geeks, some are geekier than others who thrive on diving into code, but we all agree on one thing, we want to be at the forefront of its capabilities.  We are passionate about being known for building fantastic interactive and animated emails, that’s what drives us.

Q:What’s next for your role?

As the company continues to flourish my role will take on the integration of new team members.  I will be responsible for guiding and mentoring them to make sure they receive the relevant training and are up-to-speed with the latest developments. Most importantly, I need to ensure they are happy!

A significant part of my role is making sure everything runs smoothly so 1973 Ltd, the company Chris (the other co-founder) and I started 12 years ago, continues to thrive and remains a great place to work.
